Session no. 4

Building effective task teams.

Beginning:

  • "Follow-up" session consolidating the acquired knowledge and skills

- sharing experiences related to the application of newly learnt tools
- "my successes" individual analysis and summary of accomplishments

  • Ice breakers - games for building up the atmosphere and creative involvement


1. "A good team is not created by itself" - subjectivity of the team members

  • A skilful selection of employees - minimization of personal risk

- defining employees' potential
- model of effective cooperation based on the concept of team roles according to M. Belbin

  • Integration of the team and focusing on important goals

- definition of principles as the factor influencing the atmosphere of task realization
- willingness and ability to share knowledge and experience
- the feeling of responsibility among team members

2. Stages of team development [spontaneous process and controlled process]

  • Four-phase model of team creation  according to B. W. Tuckman

- forming - team in the period of chaos and uncertainty
- storm - team in the period of conflict
- normalization - team becomes a unity
- operation - team starts to act in a constructive way

  • Team dynamics and leader's tasks in particular development phases according to S. Wheelen


3. Cooperation within a team and its significance for achieving common objectives

  • SMART, in other words, an appropriately defined objective

  • Success factors of the task team which is effective

- knowledge and acceptance of objectives
- the atmosphere based on trust and safety as well as good communication
- shared problem solving and making difficult decisions
- clear division of [leader's and employees'] tasks and responsibilities

  • Conflict in a task team and efficient methods used for settling it

- individual styles of responding to conflict
- stages and methods of settling conflicts
- communication techniques to use in the conflict situation

4. Enhancing team involvement as the element having impact on effectiveness

  • The effect of synergy, in other words, "a team can do more"

- factors influencing employees' satisfaction
- creating the cooperation which increases the efficiency of team work

  • Principles of behaviour modification in the group

- enhancing positive behaviours
- the analysis of difficult attitudes and ways to regulate them

5. Building a team - simulation game

  • The process of creation and management [group work]
