The essence of management: delegation and supervision of tasks.

Beginning:

  • "Follow-up" session consolidating the acquired knowledge and skills

- sharing experiences related to the application of newly learnt tools
- analysis of Success Cards and Further Study Cards - checking the results

  • Ice breakers - games for building up the atmosphere and creative involvement


1. Delegating as the basic tool in the work of a leader

  • Delegation planning and adjusting tasks to the competences of team members

- "I do not have to do everything myself", in other words, what I may and should share
- delegating is not the way to get rid of uninteresting tasks
- motivation and delegation - showing connections
- when shall the employee be given carte blanche?

  • Skilful delegation of tasks, in other words, how not to destroy a subordinate's motivation

- communication style in the situation of delegation  
- enhancing responsibility in subordinates
- reinforcing the morale of employees
- assistance in overcoming obstacles on the way to achieving an objective

2. "Dropping work but keeping an eye on it" - the procedure of delegating

  • Stages of delegation - 5 effective steps

- selection of the appropriate person and assigning the task [proposal]
- defining the scope of task and responsibility [objective, effect, deadline]
- showing necessary means [tools, equipment, skills]
- checking the level of understanding and answering all doubts
- discussing the principles applied for the control of the task performance

  • Barriers of delegation - the supervisor's and employee's perspective

- fears related to delegating and accepting delegation
- benefits of the subordinates' independence
- elimination of ineffective procedures in the workplace

3. Responsibility for the final result of the task

  • Individual objective in the team work and the phenomenon of "transferred responsibility"

  • Leader's dilemma: employee's freedom and the responsibility for his mistakes

- taking risk and gaining trust
- satisfaction coming from [supervisor's and subordinate's] accomplishments

4. Coordination of the subordinates' actions and enforcement of the task performance

  • Control criteria and methods of defining standards

- distinguishing basic responsibilities
- showing trust in employees
- showing what is meant by control and coordination of the undertaken tasks
- the measurement of effectiveness and potential corrective actions

5. Task delegation and enforcement - skills training

  • Simulations of conversations with subordinates [pair work – a training session with a video camera]

  • The analysis of some conversations from the practical perspective:

- self-assessment and feedback from the Participants of the training
- summary and instructions of the trainer conducting the session

  • Trainer's and Participants' summary

- "brainstorming" - how will I use the methods of management I have learnt?
- Further Study Cards - establishing further steps in the process of improvement

  • Individual consultations
